In the early 1980's Goodyear Tireand Rubber Company, inspiredby
racing, developeda special tire for Chevrolet Corvette, ahigh
performing car.
The tire's designwas radically different than most other passenger
car tires. The tire featureda very lowprofile side wall, large tread
blocks for dry traction grip, a very stiff sidewall anda nylon capover
the steel belts tohold the tire together at high speeds.
The tire featureda unique sidewall marking, calleda speed rating,
and it was designated witha "V". This "V"meant the tirehad been
safely tested in the laboratory for speeds up to 240kmph.
Thus, themodernday highperformance tirewas introduced in
America.
Why Make High-Performance Tires
• Increase in speed of automobiles
• Improved highways
• Merging of sports car into normal cars
• Normal speed rated tires are becoming a commodity
• Lower profit margins
• Value added products –Runflats etc.
• Technological progress
• Tools like FEA, CAD, CAE
Trend towards high performance….
• High-Performance tires typically have Speed-Ratings of "H" or higher
• Tread widths are wider than a regular tire.
This allows Maximum Contact Area with the road surface.
• The tread compound is usually softer than a regular tire to provide
more Dry Traction Capability.
• Faster Tread wear is generally observed in High Performance tires,
because of the better Dry Traction Capability.
Racing tires are extreme examples of High Performance tires; exhibiting
maximum Dry Traction & Grip with significantly reduced Tread wear
Life.
Flange Protector: Rim protector cushions and helps to protect
expensive alloy rims from accidental curb damage.
Performance Tread Compound: Specially formulated silica/carbon
tread compound developed to optimize wet and dry grip and give
exceptional handling in these conditions. Low hysteresis under tread
compound formulated to reduce heat build-up in high performance
conditions.
Directional Tread: Unique diagonal grooves designed to discharge
water from the contact patch to help prevent aquaplaning in wet
weather conditions. Angles of tread grooves designed to give best
wet traction and handling characteristics.
Central Rib: Central back bone of the tread pattern to provide
directional stability and rapid steering response.
Tread Elements: Shoulder blocks designed for maximum lateral
stability. The tread Pattern incorporates larger tread blocks for increased
Stiffness.
Spiral Nylon Over Wrap - continuously wound nylon strip enhances the
jointless cap ply allowing for high performance application.
NylonReinforcement creates a stiffer belt package, which means
better Steering Response and higher CorneringGrip.
Racing Technology: Racing wet grip compounds usedas benchmark
for development of the tread compound. Construction technology
influenced by racing tires togive instant response while maintaining
comfortable ride.
